The Perfect Drink

Tricks To Making The Perfect Drink

For the past two years St. Brendan Catholic Elementary School has held a marketing fair where a bunch of venders come out and sell products and it's always a big hit every time! Both last year and this year Espresso Bella attended this event and this year on November 17, 2017 I got to join in on the fun and see what this event is all about! It was a very hands on, nonstop event and I made at least 20 of each kind of drink that we provide, if not more!

When serving, Frankie, my boss, taught me all the little tricks to make the perfect espresso and gourmet drinks, such as lattes, cappuccinos, and many others; and now I'm going to share them with you!

The first trick, and one of the most important ones which plays a huge roll in determining the taste of your espresso, is how you tamp your espresso grounds. Always be sure to place your portafilter on a table or some place sturdy. Never try tamping your grounds while holding the portafiter. Then once you start tamping, pay close attention to the espresso grounds, you want to make sure that one side is not lower (more tamped) or higher (less tamped) than the other side. You want the grounds to all be even and parallel with the floor. This allows the water to run evenly throughout the espresso grounds resulting in a smooth, even and perfect espresso.

Another important factor which applies to more of the gourmet drinks is how you froth your milk. When frothing you want to find the radius (half) of your frothing jug and then split the radius in half. For example, if your frothing jug is 20cm from one end to the other, then the radius is 10cm and half of the radius is 5cm. So, at 5cm is where you want to place the wand when you froth. When you begin to froth, you do not want to see bubbles forming. If you do, just lower the wand a little deeper in the jug. Keep an ear out for a low hissing sound, that is how you'll know you're on the right track. Also, visually you want to see the milk quickly spinning inside the milk jug. If you follow those easy frothing tips, your milk will turn out beautifully.

The last trick to making the perfect espresso is to never rush. Whether you're making a drink for a customer and there is a long line up behind them, or for most of you just making an espresso for yourself at home, always be sure to take your time with it and don't rush. It's an art, and if you rush, it will never turn out perfect. As Frankie says, "You can't rush perfection!"
